Travel to Dhaka
Discover Dhaka
Loud, proud, and packed with historical and cultural interest, Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the largest city in the country. The lively nature of the city is portrayed in its many festivals and events all year round, making this one of those destinations that you just have to keep going back to.
Dhaka is an ancient city, but has seen various transitions throughout its history, when empires tended to come in and stamp their authority on the place. Dhaka always managed to resist to an extent, and instead of complying, it absorbed the different cultures into its own melting pot. That means alongside mosques and Hindu temples you'll find British colonial buildings and hints of the ancient Mughal Empire too.
This is your chance to discover this remarkable destination with low-cost flights to Dhaka with Jazeera. It takes just five hours and 49 minutes to fly from Kuwait to Dhaka, making it an easily accessible destination for couples and families, as well as adventure travellers who want to experience a vibrant, energetic destination that's full of surprises.
Essential Facts
Things To Do
Chawk Mosque
Dhaka has several important mosques, and while others may be larger, the Chawk Mosque is a delight. It's situated in the Old Quarter and was built in the 1600s. It's a charming and tranquil spot, but bear in mind that it is a religious site so please dress and act appropriately.
Lalbagh Fort
Built in 1678 by Prince Mohammad Azam, this Mughal fort has played a pivotal role in the history of Bangladesh. Today, its characteristic towers and pristine gardens make it a tranquil and peaceful spot, despite its somewhat bloody history! There’s a museum, and several monuments including the Tomb of Pari Bibi, and the Audience Hall.
National Botanical Gardens
Covering over 205 acres, the National Botanical Gardens is home to some of the country's unique flora. Its location next to the Dhaka Zoo also makes it a great spot for a family day out.
Suhrawardi Uddyan
It started life as a racecourse during the British Raj, but this important location has now been converted into a large park with tranquil gardens and the culturally important Shadhinota Stambha monument and Eternal Flame. It's a great spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and just relax for a while.
Shopping
If you love shopping, you'll love Dhaka. Home to some of the largest shopping malls in the world, it's an eclectic mix of market stalls, boutique stores, and luxury, high-end outlets selling the very best in fashion, leatherwork and accessories. For some serious mall shopping head to Basundhara City or Jamuna Future Park although be warned - you'll need all day just to wander around one of these retail behemoths.
If you prefer things a little more intimate and don't mind haggling, head for the Banga Bazar, on Kamruzzaman Sharani Street, for a genuinely authentic 'Old Dhaka' feel. The winding alleyways and narrow streets are crammed with stalls and hawkers.
Food And Drink
Whatever you fancy at any time of the day or night, Dhaka is a gourmet's delight. Buffet style restaurants are incredibly popular, and apart from the local Bangladeshi specialties you'll find cuisine from all over the globe, including Indian, Thai, Chinese and even Mexican. If you have a sweet tooth then look out for the local sweets known as misti or mishti, which are soft milk curd balls dipped in syrup. Chicken is the most staple main course, usually in the form of Chicken biryani. Vegetarians and vegans will find plenty of variety on offer.
Things To Know
Visa Requirements
- All visitors (including children) will need a visa to enter Bangladesh. You will normally need to arrange these before you go. You'll also need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the proposed departure date, and three passport-sized photos. You may also be asked to produce other proof of identity including a bank statement and a company letter head for business requests. Visas are valid for three months and allow a stay of up to one month. It takes around 10 days to process a requirement so apply at least two to three weeks before you leave.
Other facilities
- Healthcare in Dhaka is very good, with clean, efficient hospitals and walk-in trauma centres. However, healthcare is not free at the point of care, so make sure you have health insurance before travelling. Avoid drinking tap water or drinks with ice in them.
- Banks and ATMs are plentiful, but do remember that your bank may charge you to make withdrawals. Ensure you have some cash as well as credit cards when exploring the markets, as smaller shops and stalls may not accept card payments.
Getting around
- The city streets can be difficult to navigate if you're not used to them, so the best way to get around is by rickshaws or water taxis. Auto rickshaws are faster and are metered, and ordinary taxis need to be booked at your hotel, rather than hailed on the street. Buses are plentiful and very cheap, but very crowded!
