Travel to Assiut

Discover Assiut

Situated on the fertile plains of the Nile about 375 km south of Cairo, Assiut (or Asyut) was once considered the centre of Egypt's farming communities and an important commercial and political city.

The city prides itself in having the highest Coptic Christian concentration in the country and one of largest Coptic Catholic bishopric churches in Egypt - the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared here as an apparition.

Assiut has a wealth of historical attractions that draw people from around the world. It is one of the few places in the world that still produces silver appliqué shawls and is home to a big textile industry. You'll also find excellent pottery, rugs and inlaid woodwork here.

You can also catch a traditional Nile boat for a once-in-a-lifetime trip down the mighty river, or spend your days wandering through the city's Corniche and bazaars to find those special trinkets as a reminder of your holiday to Assiut.

Things To Do

Deir Rifa Tombs

This site tucked away in the mountains of Asyut is a real hidden gem. Overlooking the village of Deir Rifa, these tombs and monasteries are spectacularly carved into the mountain rocks. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear as the climb is rocky.

Meir Monumental Tombs

For a taste of ancient Egypt, drive an hour to the Meir Monumental Tombs to see the beautiful hieroglyphics. A visit to these tombs of the rulers of Asyut is a must if you like Egyptian art.

The Holy Virgin Mary Monastery

The monastery draws hordes of Egyptians every year, particularly in August. The views from here are stunning. The actual cave dates back to the period of the old Egyptian Pharaohs.

Shopping

Being located where it is, Assiut is not known as a typical place to shop. However, it is famous for silver-applique shawls, which are still made here. Rugs and pottery are also hand-crafted in the town and can be found in the markets. Make sure you stop by at one of the carpet manufacturing units. The Assiut City Centre is also worth a visit, along with the Star Mall and the Amira Mall.

There's also a choice of modern shopping malls, including El Watania Mall, where you'll find the latest fashions on sale, as well as eateries and entertainment. They're also air-conditioned, making them a welcome escape from the heat of the day.

Food And Drink

From pizza and shawarma to kofta and kebab, you'll find a choice of cuisine at reasonable prices in the city. There are plenty of options for vegetarians and a selection of western-style fast food chains too. You'll find restaurants, cafés, and coffee shops in the hotels, shopping malls and streets across the city.

If you're looking for a decent sit-down meal, then the rooftop restaurant at Al Watania Palace Hotel is the one to visit, or you can try the more rustic 'fuul' and 'falafel' stands around the train station plus the many fast food outlets along nearby Sharia Al Gomhuriyya.

A tourist favourite is Cook Window, considered one of the best restaurants in the city. The food is of high quality and the service, excellent. The Arabiata Restaurant is another popular spot with an extensive menu to suit all tastes. It is great value and the fare is delicious.
