Travel to Dushanbe

Discover Dushanbe

Wreathed by the Gissar mountains in the north and east and bordered by the ragged peaks of the Karatau range to the south, holidays to Dushanbe with Jazeera Airways will see you exploring a city set in an ice-cream scoop of a valley. The capital of Tajikistan might be home to less than 1 million people, but Dushanbe is firmly establishing itself as a cousin to Dubai. While it wears its past on its architectural sleeve, the city is starting to see glittering buildings made from steel and glass, forging a future influenced by its rich history.

At first glance, Dushanbe can appear to be a confusing city. With more modern buildings, such as the wedding-cake style Plaza Twin Towers looming over buildings such as the elegantly squat Ismaili Centre and the old-world charms of the Lohuti Theatre, there's an unpredictable beauty to the skyline. However, while Dushanbe might offer an extraordinary range of architectural ambition, it’s also populated with some beautiful parks. If you feel the need to leave the hustle and bustle behind you, check out the likes of Capital Park and Victory Park to see Mother Nature manicured to her absolute best.

For holidays with that special someone, there are plenty of landmarks to explore, such as the delicate, ornate splendour of the Haji Yaqub Mosque and a fascinating look at the city's cultural backdrop, in the form of the Noor Art Gallery. However, if you're travelling with the family, spend some time at the Delfin Aquapark. Packed with rides and slides, it's the perfect spot to let kids burn up some energy while cooling down at the same time.

Things To Do

National Museum of Tajikistan

Set on the banks of the River Varzob, there are few more beautiful backdrops for a treasure trove of artefacts and antiquities. Recently renovated, it's home to 22 exhibition halls, where you can trace the country's history from the Middle Ages to modern times. You'll also find an extensive collection of curios and specimens from the natural world and even a section devoted to fine arts. A superb day out, this museum boasts a picture-perfect park littered with statues of notable Tajik figures, such as Cyrus the Great and Ismail Samani.

Mevlana Yakub Charki Mosque

Located on Rudaki Avenue, the Mevlana Yakub Charki Mosque is one of the city's most visited buildings. Capped with a dome rendered in striking blue, it's easy to find and is the second-largest mosque in Dushanbe. If you're looking to see it at its best, head to the mosque as the sun is starting to set. Be aware that, should you wish to go inside, the dress code is conservative, and women must wear headscarves.

Fann Mountains

While this attraction might be a couple of hours' drive from the city, the views alone are worth it. The Fann Mountains are ideal for those who want to stretch their legs, breathe in the purest air, and discover all the secrets the range has to hold. From streams and rivers to the glassy blue of the Alaudinn Lake, this is the perfect destination for those who want to see Tajikistan in all its wild beauty. While there's plenty of flora to enjoy, wildlife is scarcer. Keep an eye out for mountain goats and the occasional Brown Bear.

Shopping

Shopping in Dushanbe gives you a look at the city from both ends of the telescope. For an authentic Tajik shopping experience, there’s no better place to go than the Bozori Mekhrgon bazaar. The largest in the city, it’s a heady collection of fragrant spices, perfumed teas, local handicrafts, and traditional fabrics. If that’s too busy, check out the Barakat Bazaar, where you’ll find some superb examples of local embroidery and authentic Tajik clothing.

If you prefer shopping with a more contemporary edge, the Dushanbe Mall is the place to go. Packed with designer goods, jewellery, and big-name brands, it's ideal for releasing any dedicated bargain hunters into the wild.

Food And Drink

Street food is part and parcel of the Tajik culture, so expect your tastebuds to be tempted almost everywhere you go. From herby pilaffs and juicy kebabs to desserts dripping in syrup, there's something to suit even the pickiest of palates. However, Dushanbe also has a burgeoning restaurant scene, where you'll find all the flavours of Central Asia served with a modern twist in contemporary surroundings. Whether you want to eat like a local or enjoy something sophisticated with a loved one, holidays to Dushanbe with Jazeera Airways offer a menu worth poring over.

Things To Know

Visa Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for a minimum period of three months from the date you arrive and have at least two blank pages.
  • You will need a visa to visit or travel through Tajikistan, each of which can be obtained through the Tajik Embassy.
  • You must have proof of a COVID-19 vaccination upon entry to Tajikistan. You may also present a negative PCR test issued within 72 hours of arrival.

Getting around

  • Because Dushanbe is a relatively small city, getting around on foot is easy and one of the best ways to see all the sights. As a frame of reference, if you can see the Ismaili Centre, you know that you’re close to major roads, such as Karaboev Avenue and Saadi Sherozi Avenue.
  • If you want to experience the city like a local, try one of the local taxis, trolleybuses, or buses. Frequent - and frequently busy - they'll give you a quick insight into how the residents get from A to B. However, they're easy to navigate and will get you where you need to be.
