Travel to Doha

Discover Doha

Doha is a happy blend of the old and new - traditional souqs co-exist with contemporary shopping malls, 5-star hotels with homely guest houses. From the award-winning Museum of Islamic Art to the bohemian Souq Waqif, from Katara Cultural Village to Education City, Doha has so much to offer the tourist.

The city is seeing large scale development and the impressive skyline is a sure sign of investment by the Qatari government. The city is certainly establishing itself as the premier commercial destination in the Arabian Gulf. Hosting the 2022 FIFA World UP has put the city on the international map. Other interests include real estate investments and sponsorship of leading international football clubs including Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona.

Things To Do

Desert Safari

Take an adventurous journey into the heart of the Qatar desert on this 4-hour tour. Show how you can navigate the sand dunes in a 4x4 vehicle, then continue towards the inland sea.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara is a fascinating cultural village on West Bay, with some exquisite architecture from the Islamic world. It has a busy gallery area, dozens of restaurants, and an open-air amphitheatre overlooking the sea.

Museum of Islamic Art

The museum is a stunning showcase of Islamic art, displaying work from three continents spanning over 1,400 years. Designed by the celebrated architect I.M. Pei, he has harnessed the key elements of classic Islamic architecture.

Souq Waqif

The souq is in the renovated Arabic market quarter where you can easily wander around the corridors for hours. It is organised in sections like spice shops, textiles, and even a quarter selling falcons.

Shopping

Doha is packed with shopping options, from traditional souqs to the modern glitzy shopping malls. A stroll around a traditional souq is a memorable experience since it gives you a chance to rub shoulders with the locals and pick up some great bargains. The Souq Waqif is a good place to start, then wander off to the Gold Souq, the Falcon Souq and the Handicrafts Souq. There's also the Spices & Sweets area.

However, the Malls are a major leisure pursuit where families 'hang out'. The City Centre is by far the biggest and most popular. Located in West Bay, it has a range of stores including jewellery and perfume outlets. Further afield, there is Villaggio Mall where you'll find many western stores. The food court is worth sampling with its fast food style restaurants, as well as several sit-down options. The other option is the Hyatt Plaza Mall located near Sports City, which is smaller but worth a quick look around. Landmark Shopping Mall specialises mainly in clothing, jewellery, and cosmetics.

Food And Drink

Given the diversity of expatriates in Doha, there is a large variety of different types of cuisine, including Indian, Thai, Chinese, Italian, Korean and, of course, typical Middle Eastern food. There are also the well-known American chains like Roger's Diner, Chili's, and TGI Fridays. When you are in a hurry there's always McDonald's, KFC, Hardee's, Burger King and Dairy Queen, as well as countles pizza outlets.

Local food in Doha is exceptional, in particular the Turkish restaurants which serve good food at reasonable prices. Their starters are mouth-watering and the main courses like Mixed Grill are so satisfying. Fancy some Persian food? Ask the taxi to take you to Shebestan Restaurant.

Doha also has a large Indian population so Indian restaurants are plentiful. The Garden Village is not to be missed. As for Seafood 'Best Fish' a little further on Al-Mirghab St. is your best bet. For something more upmarket try the Fish Market at the Movenpick Hotel.

  • The government-run Karwa Public Bus operates buses every 15 to 30 minutes along many of the major routes. You'll find timetables displayed at the sheltered bus stops. The buses are comfortable and environmentally friendly. To travel on one all you do is buy a Karwa Smartcard. Or buy a single journey fare.
  • There's also a whole host of car-rental companies at the arrivals section of the airport. Be aware though, that most people find their way around the city using landmarks as road signs can be poor.
