Travel to Moscow

Discover Moscow

Situated in western Russia and overlooking the glittering meanders of the Moskva River, Moscow is Russia's proud and spectacular capital. Home to almost 12 million people, it defies the sombre stereotypes that precede its appeal. If you're looking for a holiday destination that combines all the elements of a fairytale city with a rich and proud history, a holiday to Russia with Jazeera Airways needs to be at the top of your list. While much of the architecture sings of the country's imperialist past, the glitter and glean of newer buildings lets you know that you've booked a break with 21st Century sensibilities on tap.

With monumental minarets, squat and imposing buildings, and gothic spires peppering the city, Moscow offers a look at the city's past, present, and future, in one fell swoop. If you want to see the city at its most iconic, the Kremlin building is the best place to start. However, check out the stunning columns that support the world-renowned Bolshoi Theatre to get a glimpse at Moscow's more artistic side. For something both historical and contemporary, Red Square is enough to give anyone pause for thought.

However, if you're taking a trip with the tribe, the likelihood is that you'll need an ace up your sleeve. Peppered with playgrounds, Gorky Park is the perfect place to take the family, offering everything from gardens and cafes to yoga classes and a summer cinema. For those who want to leave the babble of the city behind them, this is the perfect oasis.

Things To Do

Red Square

If you’re going to start anywhere in Moscow, this is where you want to begin. Red Square gives a beautiful and moving look at how the Soviet Union has embraced the cultures it’s taken under its wing. From the formidable architecture of the Kremlin building to the gothic beauty of St Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow’s architecture hides nothing about its eclectic and fiercely fought history. The perfect destination for those with an interest in history, you’ll find buildings welcoming into the country’s past, present, and future.

Arbat Street

For a quick coffee and a dip into the Russian cultural scene, Arbat Street is one of the more artistic areas of the city. Populated with cates, restaurants, and art galleries, it's the perfect place to unwind. You'll also find that it's the best place to get your portrait or caricature taken. Arbat Street is home to several established and up-and-coming artists, where you can buy high-end art at street-savvy prices. If you need to unwind and watch the world go by, this street is famous for its laid-back appeal.

Tretyakov Gallery

With the likes of Chekhov, Serov, and Kandinsky up its self-deprecating sleeves, Russia has given the world some of its most significant artists. The Tretyakov Gallery, housed on Lavrushinsky Lane, offers a chance to soak up Russian art, housing more than 2,000 works from as far back as the 17th Century to those that are ruffling feathers in the modern day. A superb holiday hotspot, you can expect to spend at least two hours browsing the works of some of the country’s finest artists.

Shopping

Shopping in Moscow combines the classy, the chic, the rustic and the authentic. If you're looking for something high-end and haute couture, then the Moscow GUM Mall will likely have everything you're looking for. From the affordability of the likes of Zara to the wallet-lightening products offered by Dior, this is Russian opulence presented at its best.

However, if you're looking for something with a more genuine Muscovite feel, check out the local bazaars and markets. Izmaylovskiy Bazaar offers the whole experience, from the smells of fresh produce and the strains of traditional music to the hustle and bustle of haggling over handicrafts and artefacts. If you want to dig a little deeper, hunt out the Bloshiny Rynok flea market, where you’ll find antiques and curios from Russia’s bygone days.

Food And Drink

While you might not expect it, Moscow is a fabulous place for street food. You'll find vendors on all the squares, offering the likes of meat-stuffed chebureki, spiced shawarmas, and the ever-popular pirozhki. While the diet tends to lean towards the meatier side of the menu, there’s plenty for those who prefer a vegetarian diet.

In keeping with a city that's a mass of contradiction, there are high-end and fine-dining restaurants almost everywhere you turn. For the best ultimate in caviar, fish, and blinis to make your eyes water, there are world-class restaurants offering world-class food in world-class surroundings. If you're taking a holiday to Moscow with Jazeera Airways with that special someone, there are venues that wouldn't be out of place in a Hollywood movie.

Things To Know

Visa Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for a minimum period of six months after your visa’s expiry date.
  • You will need a visa to visit Moscow obtained from your local Russian Embassy.
  • There are no requirements for proof of a COVID-19 vaccination upon entry to Moscow, although random testing on arrival is a possibility.

Getting around

  • If you’re travelling within the city, the Metro is clean, dependable, and safe. As the traffic system is often oversubscribed, this tends to be the option used by most of the locals. Tickets can be bought from stations, whether you are travelling within the city limits or beyond.
  • Buses, trains, and trolleys are a second-best compared to the Metro. Typically in service between 5.30 am and 1.00 am the following morning, they tend to be less reliable and more crowded. You can buy tickets on board the transport of your choice or from ticket booths close to the appropriate stations.
